ヨーロッパのインテリア雑誌に取り上げられたのをキッカケに世界中で大ブレイクしたモロッコベニワレン絨毯は、全羊毛で白と黒のシンプルなモノトーンで描かれているのは網模様。ワレンの谷に暮らすワレン人と言われるベルベル文化では【家を守る】という意味で、各家庭に一枚は客間やリビングルームにどーんと存在感を放って敷かれている。冬は暖かく、夏はひっくり返して使われていています。この地方でベニワレン絨毯は、女性たちが結婚するときに、花嫁道具として持っていかれる大切に受け継がれている伝統工芸です。
Featured in an interior design magazine in Europe, Moroccan Beni Ouarain rug became a world sensation.
It is 100% wool and has a simple black and white monotone crosshatch pattern.
In the Ouarain tribe of Berber culture, who live in a valley of Ouarain, the word Beni Ouarain means “house protection.” Each Ouarain household has the rug in the guest or living room and it is such an outstanding room decoration.
This winter-warm rug can be flipped over and used during summer as well.
In the area, daughters bring Beni Ouarain rug as a dowry. It is a Moroccan traditional craft inherited with respect.

No chemical dye and bleach are used in Beni Ouarain rug production.
The color is uneven because it’s all natural and raw.

ベニワレンは、化学染料や漂白剤は、一切使用せず、すべて羊の自然な色を活かした色で作っています。
絨毯の色にムラがあるのも羊がもつ
本来の風合いです。

羊毛を刈った後は、何度も洗い、
毛に付いている油を落とした後に、
叩きながら乾かして行きます。
After shearing, the wool is washed for multiple times, oil on the fur is removed, then the material is hit to be dried.

ブラッシングするように、何度もなぞりながら、ふわふわの羊毛にしていきます。これは想像以上
力のいる重労働です。
As brushing hair, the wool is combed over and over until it’s fluffy. It takes so much more effort than you can imagine.

棒に絡ませながら糸にしていきます。
一つ一つの動きは女性たちの中に
あり、長い年月が染み込ませてきた
技術でもあります。

Beni Ouarain Rug Manufacturing Process
Wrapping the wool around a stick, a thread is made.
These women know the exact timing and movement for the operation. It’s the mastery acquired by years of experiences.

糸は機械と手で撚られたものとあります。違いは、機械の糸だと毛がすぐに寝てしまい風合いが変わります。
絨毯を作る前に素材から大量に作り上げてから絨毯作りが始まります。

昔から、絨毯を作る枠組みも
木材を組み立てて作られていました。
Since early times, rug weaving frames were built with woods.
There are two types of threads, hand-twisted and machine-twisted. The machine one in fact gets flat quite easily and changes texture. It’s important to provide massive amount of the material before start weaving the rug.

このクシのような重い鉄で
叩きながら目を詰めていきます。
Indispensable in rug making, this comb-like tool made with heavy iron is used to tap the rug for tightening stitches.

仕上がりをチェックし
モロッコで手洗い天日干し、
日本でもクリーニングに出してからのお渡しとなります。
We check the finish, hand-wash and sun-dry the product in Morocco. And we dry-clean it in Japan before shipping.
世界で大流行しているベニワレンではあるものの、実際は村にあった絨毯が安価で持ち出され現在市場にビンテージとして出回っており、この地域で絨毯を作り続ける女性たちに恩恵を受けていない現状があります。ベニワレン地方でベニワレンの伝統が継承されないまま、作り続ける女性たちも多くありません。
